internships

There is no better place to start your musical journey than the Music Building Chicago (formerly Music Garage)! With thousands of musicians passing through our doors every week, there may be no better networking opportunity in Chicago.  Our professional and experienced staff will teach you what it takes, from both a business and creative perspective, to make it in the music industry. Our goal is to ensure that every intern leaves here better prepared to follow their dreams. We will work with you to refine your talents and provide opportunities to nurture them…and have a lot of fun along the way!

Interns will focus on a Core Project during their internship.  Each project focuses on a specific aspect of the music business and will enable you to develop and refine the skills you need to pursue a career in the music business.

Featured artist

This project will give you endless opportunities to connect with musicians. Our Featured Artist program, spotlights a local artist with an in-house display in our lobby, a featured post on all of our social media channels and a photo shoot. As the program liaison to the artists, you will spearhead everything from initial contact, conducting interviews, media production, and posting the final product.

Graphic design

As our Graphic Design Intern, you’ll be the first in line for all design projects. You’ll create our artist posters for the Featured Artist program, social media graphics, and various website and marketing materials for Music Building Chicago (formerly Music Garage). You’ll also have the opportunity to make your own connections, within the building, for freelance possibilities.
Requirements: Proficient in Photoshop and/or Adobe Creative Cloud software. Please include your portfolio.

marketing support

The marketing support project involves supporting internal and external marketing initiatives promoting the Music Building Chicago (formerly Music Garage). This core project will focus on college outreach, event promotion and conceiving and implementing programs to achieve deeper awareness of the Music Building Chicago (formerly Music Garage) throughout our building and city.

social media

As the social media intern, you’ll be working on creating content for all of our social media platforms. You’ll learn how social media, for a business, differs from personal use and how to effectively plan, track, and execute strategies that gain traction and help the business grow. We really pride ourselves on our social media efforts, as it has become a huge form of communication for us with our tenants, customers, and the Chicago music scene.

venue relations

As the Venue Relations Intern, you would typically be responsible for exchanging promotional materials with the venues we partner with and initiating cross-promotional campaigns. Although COVID-19 has come to haunt us, in the future, you get to build relationships with industry professionals at venues like Metro, Schubas Tavern, The Empty Bottle, Reggies Rock Club, Bottom Lounge and more.

Being an intern at the Music Building Chicago (formerly Music Garage) truly changed my life. Not only is the full time staff amazing to work with, but at the end of my internship I was able to call all of them my close friends. After my four months as an intern I learned so much about the music business and how to operate and repair a lot of gear I wasn’t that familiar with. After leaving the internship, the General Manager Joe helped me build up my application, and trained me how to prepare properly for a professional interview, and that’s how I got my career doing audio and film work for FEMA. The Music Building Chicago (formerly Music Garage) is an amazing community full of wonderful people. This is definitely the coolest and most impactful internship around.
